책을 읽다가

코엘료의 연금술사 을 주제로 한 내용이 나왔습니다. 인생의 의미에 대한 내용이 나오면서 영화 '홀랜드 오퍼스' 가 나오더군요. 궁금증이 생겼습니다. 어떤 영화 이길래 글쓴이가 예시로 들었을까...인생에 대한 무슨 심오한 의미가 담겨져 있을까

그래서 찾아 봤습니다. 다행히 케이블에서 해당 영화를 하고 있더군요. 오래된 영화라 부담없는 금액으로 vod 시청을 해보았습니다.

첫 시작은 행복한 결혼생활을 하고 있는 주인공. 홀랜드가 나옵니다. 시대를 알 수 있도록 그 시대의 주요 사건 사고들을 짧게 보여주고요. 1960년대 부터 시작되더군요. 젊은 홀랜드는 악단 생활을 하며 교향곡을 작곡 하고 있었습니다. 그의 꿈은 언젠가 자기가 직접 작곡한 교향곡을 직접 지휘하는 거였죠.

하지만 결혼생활을 위해 보험용으로 취득했던 교원자격증을 통해 근처 고등학교 음악교사로 취직을 합니다. 그의 아쉬움을 와이프도 너무 안따까워 하지만, 2,3년만 하지며 위로를 하죠. 결국엔 그 2.3년이 30년이 되지만...

교직에 대해 단 1의 관심도 없었던 그였기에 아이들을 가르치는데 너무 서투르고 그닥 관심조차 없었습니다. 그렇게 지루한 음악 수업을 계속 할 뿐이었죠.

그러다, 아이가 생기고, 당황했지만 선생을 계속 해야 된다는 부담을 느끼며, 조금씩 아이들에게 관심을 가지게 되고, 가르치는 방식도 좀 더 흥미위주로 다양하게 준비해 인기 음악 선생이 됩니다.

저 드럼 치는 배우. 아이언맨1 에 로다주 친구. 그 대령이다.ㅋ

그렇게 그난 진정한 선생으로 거듭나죠. 물론 본인의 꿈도 포기하지 않고 조금씩 조금씩 준비 하지만, 귀가 들리지 않는 장애가 있는 아들과 한시도 가만 놔두지 않는 아이들로 인해 그 조금씩 붙잡고 있던 꿈도 흐릿해져만 갑니다.

그렇게 세월이 흐르고 흘러 30년이 훌쩍지나 1990년대가 되고, 

학교에서는 예산을 이유로 예체능 수업을 정리하기 시작합니다. 여기에 홀랜드의 음악 수업도 그 대상이 되죠. 

마지막 출근을 하고 학교를 떠나려는 그에게

옛 제자들과 지역 주민들이 그를 위한 성대한 깜짝 행사를 열어 줍니다. 

그가 평생 꿈꾸던 그가 만든 교향곡 아메리칸 드림 을 제자들이 모두 모여 연주해주죠.

직접 지휘하는 장면으로 영화는 끝이 납니다. 

이 영화는.

내가 지금 하고 있는 일이 진정한 행복을 가져다 주는 일임을 잊지 말고 열심히 하면 꼭 그 행복이 언젠가는 올거다 라는 교훈을 줍니다. 하고 있는 일이 무엇이든 범죄만 아니라면 누군가 나에 대한 리스펙을 의미를 알아 봐 줄거라는 확신을 말입니다. 
오랜 직상생활로 현타가 오는 요즘 뜻하지 않은 위로를 받을 수 있었던 영화라 나름 의미가 있었습니다. 영화는 보는 내내 스펙타클 하지도 임펙트 있는 상황이나 장면 하나 없지만 이런 영화일 수록 끝나고 남는 여운은 더 깁니다.

인생이 너무 지루하다고만 생각하시는 분들께 추천합니다.

 

 

I was reading a book, and it mentioned "The Alchemist of Coelharo" as the theme, delving into the meaning of life. It also mentioned the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus." This piqued my curiosity, so I decided to look it up. Fortunately, the cable TV was airing the movie, and I watched it at an affordable price.

The story begins with the main character, Mr. Holland, enjoying a happy married life. It shows significant events and incidents from the time period, starting in the 1960s. A young Mr. Holland is living the life of a struggling composer in a band, with a dream to one day conduct his own symphony.

However, he takes a job as a high school music teacher with the sole purpose of supporting his family. His wife is understanding of his aspirations, but after a few years, those few years turn into 30 years.

Mr. Holland had no interest in teaching and was unenthusiastic about instructing children in music. He continued to teach uninspiring music classes.

As time goes by, he has a child and, feeling the responsibility to provide, he slowly starts taking an interest in his students and prepares more engaging lessons. He becomes a popular music teacher.

Then, there's a drum-playing student, a friend of Robert Downey Jr. in "Iron Man 1." He's a colonel. And so, Mr. Holland truly becomes a dedicated teacher while never giving up on his dream. However, his dream becomes hazy due to his hearing-impaired son and his students who need constant attention.

As 30 years fly by, it's the 1990s, and budget cuts at the school lead to cutbacks in extracurricular activities, including Mr. Holland's music classes. On his last day at school, his former students and the local community throw a surprise celebration in his honor.

They all gather to perform the symphony he had composed, called "American Dream." The movie ends with Mr. Holland conducting it himself.

This movie conveys a lesson: never forget that what you're doing right now can bring true happiness if you work hard. It also emphasizes that whatever you do, as long as it's not a crime, someone will appreciate and understand the significance of your efforts. In these times when I get the blues from my long work life, this unexpected source of comfort was meaningful to me. The movie doesn't have any spectacular or impactful scenes, but such movies often leave a lasting impression.

I recommend it to those who think life is too dull.
